Themistokles was made the commander of the Greek fleet, which was made up of 170 triremes. In 480 BCE, Themistokles combined his fleet with those from Euboea and Carystus and won the decisive naval battle of Salamis. This took place at Salamis in Greece and was a victory for the Greeks, as it ended the Persian invasion of Greece. After Salamis, the Greeks under Themistokles won the Battle of Plataea and the Battle of Mycale. At the end of the fifth century, the Greeks were once again fighting the Persians, and this was for the third time. In 522 BCE, the Greek army was victorious in the Battle of Marathon. This was a Greek victory which led to the creation of the modern Greek state. In 449 BCE, Greece was once again facing Persia. The Persian army, led by Xerxes, captured the Greek city of Athens. The Persians were defeated by the Greeks led by Themistokles at the Battle of Salamis in the same year, saving Greece from invasion. In 443 BCE, a coalition of Greek states under the leadership of Athens took up arms against the Persians.
